This looks like a really awesome television show, recently previewed at DISCOP AFRICA 2015. Jongo is a television series set to premiere in 2016 in South Africa, following a young man who gains supernatural abilities after discovering an alien crystal.
Jongo is set in Johannesburg, following Eli King after he finds a crystal left to him by his murdered father. The crystal gives him superhuman abilities, and with his newfound speed and reflexes, he sets out to find who killed his father. As he investigates further, his family and friends are caught in the middle as he discovers that there are others with crystals of their own.
The trailer for the show makes it look like a really fun superhero affair, complete with a classic origin story. Click here for the trailer and other shorts by Motion Story.
Pacou Mutombo stars in Jongo, and is “one of the world’s top hip-hop dancers and his dancing features prominently in the series.”

The show’s writer and director, Gareth Crocker, noted that they wanted to create a show with a positive image of Africa, while also highlighting problems that they face in the continent:

“We wanted to showcase the beauty and dynamism of the continent and of South Africa in particular. So many films and TV shows focus on the problems Africans face. Jongo will emphasize all that is positive about this great continent of ours. We knew from the outset that we wanted to do something quite different from the other shows currently on air in this genre... We wanted to ensure authenticity – to produce something that people can connect with... In casting, we specifically sought out people who are closely aligned to the characters we’ve written.

An 8-episode first season, shot primarily in Johannesburg, "Jongo" tells the story of a young man, Eli King, who acquires an array of supernatural abilities after he finds an alien crystal in a cave at the "Cradle of Humankind." As Eli tries to deal with the death of his father and sets out to find the men responsible, he must also grapple with the powers of the crystal and how it will indelibly alter the course of his life. What Eli doesn’t know is that the men he is hunting have crystals of their own and need Eli’s stone to fulfil an ancient and devastating prophecy, which will threaten the lives of millions.

Locally hailed as a game changer for continental African TV content, "Jongo" stars Pacou Mutombo, a renowned dancer/actor. He is joined by Katlego Baaitse, who play Eli’s best friend Kay, Pauline Zwane as Eli’s girlfriend Maya, and Luthuli Dlamini as Noah, the head of an agency that protects the planet from alien activity.

Autodesk MeetUp #1 Nigeria

Promo Flyer for the Event

The event was officially my first Autodesk CGMeetUp ever of any kind and a memorable experience to recall with nostalgia. My invite came through by being hooked up by Tayo Fasunon (3D Animator/Motion Graphics Artist – Frame Factory) and facilitated invites of other creative colleagues both who I knew in person before online via Animation West Africa Community group page on Facebook who supported the event in collaboration with Ideate Technologies and the Autodesk User Communitywhich is a user community for African designers, creators, visionaries and world changers.

I will admit I got the event shortly after the program had started due to my responsibilities at work that day. Glad I still got there in time for the rest of the awesome Meetup. The host was the amiable Dolapo Ojelabi, an architect by discipline and an Application Engineer for Ideate Technologiesalso, a Pan-African IT company with presence in over 36 countries across the continent including Nigeria. The company also happens to be the sole Autodesk Authorised Reseller for the region with a Value Added Reseller Status. Meetups of this kind are continuously being scheduled to take place across other locations within Africa.

Autodesk uses this platform to propagate their vision of getting user feedback on their applications for architecture, engineering, construction, media, animation and entertainment. This is a commendable effort in the creative drive of this global leading firm in encouraging CG Artists to use authentic licenses and authorised software from the company’s various download websites and channels. It is to discourage piracy amongst other vices that are frowned at *winks winks*

In attendance also was Mr. Joseph Nwanegbo (COO) of JonRelt Technology an Autodesk Authorised Reseller and partner of other popular brands such as Adobe, Symantec, McAfee, APC, HP and Kaspersky. It was also good to see familiar faces such as Arc. Owolabi Akano (CG Architect/Mentor/3D ArchViz Pro - WayS Studios), Adewuyi Fagbire (CG Engineer/3D Artist - Cleverland Studios), Ricky Tim-Efobi - RcRonald Creations), Edu Shola (3D Artist/CG Blogger – Deluxe Creation Studios/Edu Shola’s Blog), Ali Akdogan (CG Artist – Ali Akdogan Productions), Lydia Shotire (Graphic Designer/3D Artist – OrangeVFX Studios) and lest I forget the creative duo of “Batman and Robin”, Eri Umusu and Godwin Akpan.
