Promo Flyer for the Event

The event was officially my first Autodesk CGMeetUp ever of any kind and a memorable experience to recall with nostalgia. My invite came through by being hooked up by Tayo Fasunon (3D Animator/Motion Graphics Artist – Frame Factory) and facilitated invites of other creative colleagues both who I knew in person before online via Animation West Africa Community group page on Facebook who supported the event in collaboration with Ideate Technologies and the Autodesk User Communitywhich is a user community for African designers, creators, visionaries and world changers.

I will admit I got the event shortly after the program had started due to my responsibilities at work that day. Glad I still got there in time for the rest of the awesome Meetup. The host was the amiable Dolapo Ojelabi, an architect by discipline and an Application Engineer for Ideate Technologiesalso, a Pan-African IT company with presence in over 36 countries across the continent including Nigeria. The company also happens to be the sole Autodesk Authorised Reseller for the region with a Value Added Reseller Status. Meetups of this kind are continuously being scheduled to take place across other locations within Africa.

Autodesk uses this platform to propagate their vision of getting user feedback on their applications for architecture, engineering, construction, media, animation and entertainment. This is a commendable effort in the creative drive of this global leading firm in encouraging CG Artists to use authentic licenses and authorised software from the company’s various download websites and channels. It is to discourage piracy amongst other vices that are frowned at *winks winks*

In attendance also was Mr. Joseph Nwanegbo (COO) of JonRelt Technology an Autodesk Authorised Reseller and partner of other popular brands such as Adobe, Symantec, McAfee, APC, HP and Kaspersky. It was also good to see familiar faces such as Arc. Owolabi Akano (CG Architect/Mentor/3D ArchViz Pro - WayS Studios), Adewuyi Fagbire (CG Engineer/3D Artist - Cleverland Studios), Ricky Tim-Efobi - RcRonald Creations), Edu Shola (3D Artist/CG Blogger – Deluxe Creation Studios/Edu Shola’s Blog), Ali Akdogan (CG Artist – Ali Akdogan Productions), Lydia Shotire (Graphic Designer/3D Artist – OrangeVFX Studios) and lest I forget the creative duo of “Batman and Robin”, Eri Umusu and Godwin Akpan.

In the program schedule, billed for a Q & A session through Skype with us via live streaming was Brad Stilwell(VFX Artist/Animation Director) who worked on such popular films such as Legend of the Guardians – The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Invictusamongst others) based in Cape Town, South Africa. He shared with us his tips and tricks and compositing workflows in Nuke on an armoured truck modelled in Autodesk Maya. He also spoke about the huge potentials of the Nigerian CG Industry. With the proper structures of administration in place and copyright laws against piracy and infringement on intellectual property not forgetting the need for more support from the government and related agencies. He stressed the need to really get our local industry in order before venturing onto the world stage and vice-versa.

He jokingly remarked though most Nigerian CG Artists feel upstaged by their South African counterparts in getting creative work locally because of preference by some corporations. The irony was in South Africa, it was a similar case scenario as creative jobs were outsourced by to their counterparts in Europe and America over them. As he put simply there needs to be more faith in our local industry over time.

Eri Umusu (3D Artist/Animator) was first up to give his visual presentation for the event. He spoke about his workflow in creating 3d organic characters and inanimate objects. From my observations it seems like he has a thing for mostly creating female characters with perfect understanding of the human physique and anatomy over male characters though creates those also*winks winks* From Autodesk 3dsmax to compositing in AfterEffects and Photoshop, it was an interesting and witty showcase by him.

Next up was Stanlee Ohikuare, award-winning film director and producer. A very down to earth, humorous and jovial fellow I knew by reputation of his previous creative works as he had been a guest speaker at Lagos ComicCon at the 2ndedition in 2013 which held at Freedom Park, Lagos Island, Lagos. He and I contributed during the Q & A session with Brad Stilwell on how we as African artists can further collaborate on future projects and he was open to the idea in the positive. He rounded the event off with his showcase presentation of his trailer for his 2013 horror flick Kpians nominated for the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA). He also recently premiered his new film Amiable on Africa Magic and won two awards at the Indie Fest 2015 for another film “Verdict” and the “Kpians” in the USA.

At the end of the formal session the attendees had a chance to interact and mingle. I got to meet the following CG Artists in person though I knew them online by reputation. Met the likes of Uche Anisiuba (3D Artist/Animator – Quadron Studios), Olumide Adeosun (3D Artist/Animator – Maverick Studios), Ayobami Ojekunle (3D Engineer/Artist – Lil Wizzle 3D), Tayo Fasunon(3D/Motion Graphics Artist – Frame Factory), Oyekunle Adewale Gabriel (CG Architect/BIM Instructor – Craftsphile Studios) amongst other guests. Looking forward to another fun CG MeetUp like this.
